If you need assistance when our office is closed, you can call the regular office number (205-856-4440) and you will be connected with our answering service. You can also reach the answering service directly at 205-930-4322 . Messages left with the answering service are referred the RN's at the Children's Hospital of Alabama Pediatric Health Information Line (PHIL ). The PHIL nurses are specially trained to help you with acute problems that occur after office hours. There is always a Tots 'n' Teens provider on call that the PHIL nurses can get in touch with if they need us. In many cases, the PHIL nurse can help you manage your child's symptoms until they can be seen in our office. They can also help you to decide whether your child needs to be seen urgently either at the Children's Hospital of Alabama Emergency Department or at a PEDIATRIC urgent care facility. ( We usually do not recommend that you take your child to an adult emergency department or to an urgent care facility that does not specialize in pediatric care)
There are some insurance plans, including Medicaid, that require a referral to urgent care facilities. Please understand that we have signed agreements stating we will only make referrals for emergency issues. We cannot make referrals to urgent care facilities for care received for chronic or minor problems, sports or camp physicals, or for visits that occur when our office is open.
Our office is open on Saturday mornings during the school year for sick visits only. If your child is experiencing symptoms on Friday evening, please plan ahead and call our office early on Saturday to get the situation handled before the office closes for the weekend.
